DeRu (aka: Shawn Xiangyang Liu) , a senior student of Shaolin Chan Wu medicine, mentor to hundreds of thousands Shaolin and Tai Chi students as well as advocators of Zen Tai Gong for natural health and healing. He is a disciple of Su Xi, a great spiritual leader and 30th generation grand master, chief monk, former Chief Master Monk and Deputy Abbot of the famous Shaolin Temple.
DeRu is the founder of Shaolin Institute, Shaolin Chan Foundation, Global Zen Consciousness Alliance and Global Zen Consciousness Conference and Chairman of Technical Committee of Pan American Wushu-Kungfu Federation and is one of the earliest Chinese martial arts Shaolin disciples entered the US, spreading the Chan and Kung Fu in the United States
He is recognized by media and martial artists worldwide as “God Father of American Sanda” and also known for having spread Chinese martial arts , traditional Chinese medicine and self healing for nearly 30 years, sharing and presenting the arts to over two millions of audience, including students of martial arts and health wellness (and disciple) worldwide, especially in the US.
From the last century in the 90s to the early 2000s, he has long served as the head coach of the US national Sanshou team and as International Sanda Championship chief referee, having led to participate in international martial arts competitions and the World Wushu Championships.
He has trained more than a hundred ordinary students and disciples who have done the extraordinary and won International Championships; among them five world Sanda champions were produced. He is one of the first Chinese Masters who have introduced Kungfu Sanda to UFC, the most famous MMA professional fighting championship platform in the world. The most famous Asian fighting champion is Cung Le (USA Sanda champion and world champion in MMA (Strike-force and UFC). Patrick Barry (UFC fighter) is also among his top team.
DeRu has not only to explore martial arts but has decades of study and research on the health and healing as well as wellness aspects of TCM and meditation; he helped more than a dozens of patients with advanced stage 4 cancer to recover to health. His research paper was reported and displayed at Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) in 1991 and his mind-body medicine research is one of the first papers recognized by the US mainstream medical community.
He has delivered thousands of speeches and presentations in the United States, China and around globe to schools, police academies , Navy, Air Force Bases , as well as presentations, lectures and speeches to medical and university groups such as Beijing University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, GW (the George Washington University), University of California, Berkeley, Harvard University, Louisiana Police Instructor Training Academes, PCOM (Philadelphia College of Orthopedics, Georgia campus and Tulane University … In the last three decades, DeRu with his Shaolin Institute teams and SCF performance teams have led thousands of Chan (Zen) arts and martial arts demonstrations, shows, retreats, camps, conferences, seminars, speeches, and lectures to over 2 million people across the globe.
Chinese CCTV has 10 documentary series on his story and his work from 1991-2008; He has appeared numerous times on local and international TV networks including Mobile, New Orleans, Atlanta, Beijing, Zhe Jian and Henan TV international networks since early 1990s. His publications and works were mentioned and presented on numerous publications, newspaper and magazines worldwide.
